Hoyo de Monterrey’s most recent line of cigars, Hoyo de Tradicion, are my new favorite smoke and I have yet to find any serious flaw with them. They’re complex, aromatic cigars that really hit the spot. You’ll find that they’re full of flavor, but not at all overwhelming. I tried the Hoyo de Tradicion on a recommendation from an employee (or maybe the owner–he’s there all the time) at C and C tobacco outlet in Ithaca, NY (on Rt 13 N. Meadow St). They rennovated the inside a couple of years ago and have a great humidore and selection. Pretty decent for a small town. But back to the Hoyo, it’s worth a try and definitely worth the price, about $5-6 for the Epicure (5.24×5).

Short Smokes Review

During the coldest months of the year in NY, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t last more than half an hour outside with a cigar. That meant no more leisurely hour long smokes after October. Until recently I was living in the Northeast where there is snow and ice and general unpleasantness during the winter. I decided to try a smaller cigar last year, but didn’t know where to start, so I went for a box of Nat Sherman (Metropolitan) quick smokes. I’m fairly certain I din’t even finish the box, and there were only 10 to begin with. They were flavorless and tasted a bit like old newspaper, not that I have any real basis for comparison. I certainly wouldn’t smoke anything I can’t enjoy a good drink with, and I wouldn’t want to ruin my drink with these. I don’t recommend them, even if they’re on sale for free.

The good news is that little cigars don’t have to be bad. Living in a warm, snow-free part of CA I don’t need to worry about frostbite or losing feeling in my hands when having a winter cigar, but I still enjoy being able to step out for a few minutes with “the smokers” and not have to spend the rest of the night outside. I recently got a few boxes of Dominican made Romeo y Julieta Cuentos, each box holding 8 tiny cigars. I like to think of these little guys as the perfect “party” smoke, only taking about 15 minutes to finish. They’re also relatively inexpensive. The Cuentos have a bold flavor for such a little cigar, and its easy to forget you’re not smoking a robusto. Careful in the humidor though, cause if they get to moist it makes for a hard draw.
